Ecological, Green City

Ideal lifestyles in sustainable cities should allow citizens to be immersed in nature-like surroundings, to inhale and stretch freely, and to lead a safe and sound healthy life. From the carbon dioxide limits regulated by the Kyoto Accord to the rising concepts of green buildings, ecology and environmental considerations will determine future urban developments.

A pivotal part of Kaohsiung's centennial planning is an“Ecological City,” which strives for environmental soundness and low inputs of energy sources. Green land is the heart of a city, and a healthy, sustainable city is built on the concept of a symbiotic environment for all.

A Lively Ecological Corridor

Mind of an Urban-living Guru

When Kaohsiung City was industrially and economically engaged in the past, it also paid a lot environmentally speaking. Under the new thinking of sustainability, Kaohsiung has been revamping the sewerage system, Lover River , Qianzhen River , and Houjin Creek so that the waterways can be cleansed. The ensuing green, riverside scenery has become a model for the rest of Taiwan .

The centennial planning has also incorporated local landscape and ecology into the building of urban views, which, in turn, gives rise to naturally open space. In northern Kaohsiung, rocks, waterweeds and wooden pegs, instead of concrete and cement, have been used to replicate the complicated water ecology in the 34-hectare Neiweibei Cultural Park, in which diverse biological beings can rest and reproduce. The Zhouzi Bog, nearby Zuoying's Lotus Lake, has also been built with natural building materials, and this landscape can be called an urban legend.

Species conservation and sustainable development are important indicators of healthy cities. In the near future, the recently built Sanmin District Benheli flood detention pond and the Banpinghu Bog, Yuanzhong Wharf and Dapingding, which are still under construction, through bog reservation and revitalization, conduce towards an ecological corridor from northern to southern Kaohsiung. Water contained by the bogs will keep species alive and reproducing; during rain seasons, water levels can be regulated because of the terrains. All these rich surrounding landforms as well as flora & fauna will make Kaohsiung a living example of a sustainable-savvy “ecological classroom”.
