There are several cities that have undergone massive infrastructural changes to accommodate the hosting of an international sporting event, such as Seoul in the hosting of the 1988 Olympic Games. The beautiful coastal city of Sydney also utilized the whole city in hosting the 2000 Olympic Games and spared no expense in the dazzling firework shows that marked the opening and closing ceremonies. Furthermore, the expenditure in hosting the 2012 Olympic Games in London will be no cheap affair as $US 44 billion is estimated to be spent on improving the 100-year old MRT system alone. The massive expense however, can be justified in the fact that the changes to all of the previously mentioned cities bring added convenience to a city for many years to come.
The World Games originated in 1980 with 13 sports in total, of which Taekwondo, which was not an Olympic sport back then, was one of them. Twenty years on, the event has expanded, especially in the sports that it involves. The 2009 World Games will be the biggest international sporting event that has ever been held in Taiwan. As a result of that, new structures are being built to accommodate the event. The National Council is spending one hundred trillion dollars (NT) to create the spectacular sporting site.
The 2009 World Games brings to Kaohsiung international vision and facilities. Regardless of whether it's building the sporting facilities or constructing the KMRT, Kaohsiung is undergoing massive change that will make it increasingly competitive against other countries. |
