[Kaohsiung News] – Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai on Monday called for stronger central-local cooperation on food safety, urging clearer statutory responsibilities and stronger coordination through amendments to the Act Governing Food Safety and Sanitation to build a more comprehensive food safety net. Speaking ahead of the Kaohsiung City Government's municipal administrative meeting on July 21, Chen said safeguarding food safety requires close collaboration between the central and local governments, with regional coordination and complementary mechanisms working together to strengthen food safety management. He noted that food inspections and on-site inspections of food businesses fall within the responsibilities of local governments, while policy formulation and cross-jurisdictional coordination should be led by the central government. He called for amendments to the Act to better define the respective responsibilities of central and local authorities, establish clearer standards for precautionary product removals, and strengthen voluntary reporting and inspection mechanisms, thereby reinforcing Taiwan's food safety net.
With the Executive Yuan scheduled to convene a meeting later that day to discuss amendments to the food safety law, Chen called for the participation of local government leaders. He said their attendance would not only enable local governments to communicate frontline perspectives to the central government but also provide an opportunity to exchange practical experience and discuss issues such as strengthening business accountability, improving the precautionary product removal mechanism, and clarifying the division of responsibilities between the central and local governments. Building consensus through constructive dialogue, he said, is key to strengthening food safety management and addressing public concerns in a practical and effective manner.
As the summer vacation begins, the Cijin Kite Festival and Inflatable Water Park are set to open this weekend, while renovation of the Cijin Ferry Terminal has recently been completed. During the municipal administrative meeting, Chen instructed relevant agencies to enhance environmental cleanliness at event venues and along surrounding roads, as well as beautify the main routes leading to major tourist attractions, ensuring that visitors from outside Kaohsiung enjoy a positive travel experience.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Chen publicly recognized the 18 outstanding communities honored in the 2025 Kaohsiung Community Development Achievement Awards. Seven communities received Gold Awards: Yiren Community (Daliao District), Yuemei Community (Shanlin District), the Shanlin District Senior Citizens Welfare Promotion Association, Guangfu Community (Cishan District), Wulin Community (Renwu District), Xingbang Community (Cianjhen District), and Yuliao Community (Ciaotou District). Seven communities received Silver Awards, while four communities received Bronze Awards, recognizing their outstanding achievements in community development and local revitalization.
