[Kaohsiung News] During the municipal administrative meeting held on June 24, Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai presided over a special presentation by the Education Bureau titled “Kaohsiung’s Achievements and Outlook for International Education.” The report highlighted the city’s progress in expanding global learning opportunities. As of 2024, Kaohsiung has established 249 sister school partnerships across 27 countries. Student participation in international programs has risen significantly from 8,902 in 2019 to 14,322 in 2024, demonstrating that international education has become a growing part of daily school life in Kaohsiung.
Earlier this month, in collaboration with the Department of Administrative and International Affairs, the Education Bureau led a delegation to the United States to visit four of Kaohsiung’s sister cities. The visit resulted in six high schools signing letters of intent for academic exchange with Green River College in Washington State. Additionally, a memorandum of understanding was signed with Orange County to deepen educational collaboration. Mayor Chen applauded these developments and encouraged the Education and Tourism Bureaus to explore systematic strategies for leveraging international education to enhance tourism.
Mayor Chen emphasized that student-centered exchange should remain the priority, providing students with greater opportunities to engage with the world, broaden their cultural understanding, improve language skills, and strengthen global competitiveness. He also tasked the Education Bureau to explore potential subsidies to ensure economically disadvantaged students can also participate in these international programs.
In light of the upcoming graduation season, Mayor Chen instructed the Youth Bureau and Labor Affairs Bureau to continue offering support for youth entrepreneurship and employment counseling. He also called for wider promotion of the city’s vocational training programs and employment support networks among new graduates.
To prevent the spread of disease during the summer break, Mayor Chen asked the Department of Health and the Education Bureau to intensify vector control inspections and remove stagnant water from school campuses. Colleges and universities were also encouraged to participate in vector control efforts. Additionally, he requested that relevant agencies and district offices enhance cleanliness and weed control in parks, tourist sites, and along major roads to maintain an inviting cityscape and high-quality recreational environment.
Prior to the meeting, the City Government honored 12 recipients of the 2025 Exemplary Civil Servant for their outstanding performance. The awardees included Section Chief Hung Wei-ting of the Environmental Protection Bureau; Section Chief Yang Fu-sheng of the Finance Bureau; Section Chief Chang Shu-chuan of the Education Bureau; Section Chief Chen Hung-chi of the Marine Bureau; Engineer Huang Yu-chun of the Public Works Bureau; Engineer Lin Yu-hsiung of the Water Resources Bureau; Investigator Lee Yen-te of the Criminal Investigation Corps, Police Department; Officer Huang Wen-lung of the Fire Bureau; Director-General Chang Hua-shan of the Department of Health; Chief Secretary Lu Chih-chen of the Bureau of Cultural Affairs; Deputy Director-General Huang Jung-hui of the Transportation Bureau; and Section Chief Chen Tzu-hua of the Department of Substance Control and Prevention.
