[Kaohsiung News] The Kaohsiung City Government held its municipal administrative meeting on May 27, beginning with the swearing-in ceremony of Shih Ching-feng as Director of the Marine Bureau. This was followed by a special report from the Department of Administrative and International Affairs on the City Diplomacy Initiative. Mayor Chen Chi-mai emphasized that city diplomacy requires cross-departmental collaboration. He urged all departments to proactively advance international cooperation within their respective areas of responsibility. This includes partnerships through sister cities and schools, collaborations with civil society organizations, and smart city initiatives to expand Kaohsiung’s global engagement and visibility.

Mayor Chen went on to highlight the upcoming International Dragon Boat Race on June 1, the Dragon Boat Festival, where the city government has formed a team to compete in a friendly match with the City Council and various foreign representative offices in Taiwan. He expressed hopes for a strong performance and invited department heads and the public to come to cheer for the athletes. With the long weekend approaching, the mayor also instructed relevant agencies to ensure cleanliness and proper maintenance of public spaces and tourist attractions. Additionally, he tasked the city’s Food Safety Task Force with intensifying inspections and sampling of festive food products.

As temperatures continue to rise, Mayor Chen stressed the importance of water safety. He directed agencies overseeing water bodies to strengthen patrol and inspection mechanisms. He also asked the Education Bureau and Fire Department to enhance drowning prevention campaigns and instructed the Police Department and Transportation Bureau to continue promoting and enforcing traffic safety measures to raise public awareness. Additionally, he reminded the municipal administration team that the City Council’s general interpellation has concluded, and departments must promptly act on the promises made during the session. He called for a sincere review of areas for improvement and continued refinement of public policy execution.

Earlier that day, Global Views Monthly magazine released the results of its “City Mayor Satisfaction Survey.” Mayor Chen was named the only five-star mayor among the six special municipalities for a second consecutive year. In a media interview, he thanked Kaohsiung citizens for their support and acknowledged the collective efforts of the city government team. He noted that Kaohsiung ranked first among the six special municipalities in categories such as economy, environment, education, transportation, and public health and was ranked first nationwide in tourism, and second among the six cities in public safety and fire protection. He reiterated his appreciation for the citizens’ support and the city government team’s efforts across various sectors, which made this recognition possible.

He went on to say that the city government team continues to push forward, advancing urban governance through city development. With just over a year remaining in his term, he has consistently encouraged the team to stay diligent and never let their guard down. In the face of intercity competition, becoming complacent means falling behind — so they must keep charging ahead, delivering solid results to repay the citizens' trust and support.
