[Kaohsiung News] As Kaohsiung enters flood season, Mayor Chen Chi-mai presided over the June 17 municipal administrative meeting with a dual focus on storm preparedness and youth safety during the upcoming summer break. He noted that outer rainbands last week brought intense rainfall, particularly in the Dashu and Daliao districts. He instructed city departments to expedite drainage improvements in flood-prone areas, enhance the training of personnel, and strengthen drainage infrastructure. He also directed the Water Resources Bureau and Environmental Protection Bureau to use the available time to clear drainage systems and roadside ditches, bolstering the city’s flood response capabilities.

Mayor Chen emphasized the need to address the growth of weeds following rainfall and the potential for mosquito breeding in stagnant water, urging all relevant agencies to clean up community environments and eliminate sources of dengue-carrying mosquitoes in high-risk areas. He also called for stricter construction site safety management and a thorough inspection of all drainage facilities to reduce disaster risk.

In anticipation of the upcoming summer vacation, the Kaohsiung City Police Department presented its “Youth Summer Safety Campaign” during the meeting. Mayor Chen stressed that teenagers are particularly vulnerable to deceptive job ads that may lead them into scams or being used as mule account holders. He instructed the Police Department, Education Bureau, and Labor Bureau to continue to intensify anti-fraud awareness campaigns, conduct inspections of public venues, and carry out public safety checks to protect youth in summer employment. To further ensure safety, particularly in rivers and coastal areas, Mayor Chen also directed the Education Bureau, Fire Department, Police Department, and Coast Guard to strengthen water safety and drowning prevention education.

Prior to the meeting, Mayor Chen personally presented awards to local school teams for their outstanding achievements. Nanzih Senior High School was crowned champion in the Girls’ Division of the 2024 National High School Five-a-Side Soccer League, while Qianzhen Junior High School took first place in the Boys’ Division of the 2024 National Junior High School B-Level Volleyball League. Mayor Chen praised the dedication of the athletes and coaches and presented them with commendations and monetary rewards in recognition of their exceptional performances.
