Kaohsiung Green Park Opens to the Public, Drawing Large Crowds — Mayor Chen Chi-mai Urges Collective Effort to Preserve Its Natural Landscape

[Kaohsiung News] Taiwan’s first ecological park transformed from a former golf course, Kaohsiung Green Park, is now open to the public. The 70-hectare site has been successfully redeveloped into a shared green space for all citizens, linking with Shuanghu Forest Park and Chengcing Lake to form a vast 470-hectare ecological water corridor. Since its opening, the park has drawn large crowds eager to experience its natural charm. During a recent municipal administrative meeting on Oct 14, Mayor Chen Chi-mai listened to feedback from various city departments and local representatives, instructing them to plan for drinking water facilities, assess food service options, and promote a park stewardship system. He emphasized the importance of maintaining supporting measures and preserving the park’s natural ecology and appearance.

To respond to public expectations for open and accessible green spaces, the city transformed the former Kaohsiung Golf Club, also known as Cheng Ching Lake Golf Club, into Kaohsiung Green Park, marking a major milestone in Kaohsiung’s Green Space Revitalization Policy — a project comparable in scale to New York’s Central Park. Covering around 70 hectares, the park retains its original rolling terrain and features over 7.2 kilometers of walking trails connecting grasslands, forest belts, and ponds. The park’s total area is roughly 2.3 times larger than the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts’ surrounding grounds.

With its vast expanse, lush greenery, and rich birdlife, the park has quickly become a popular destination, attracting approximately 75,000 visitors during the three-day National Day weekend since its opening on October 10. In a report during the municipal administrative meeting, the Public Works Bureau presented the “Core Ecological Water Corridor — Chengcing Lake Scenic Area, Kaohsiung Green Park, and Shuanghu Forest Park.” The presentation quoted a former golf club member’s heartfelt reflection: “When I entered the park, I felt anger that it had taken away my golf course. But when I left, I was moved to realize that losing it was not a loss, but a return — to nature, to family, and to life.”

Mayor Chen carefully reviewed the suggestions raised by local representatives, municipal agencies, and the Niaosong District Office, reminding visitors to follow park regulations. He instructed municipal agencies to evaluate the feasibility of providing drinking water and food services, strengthen park patrols and the adoption program, and ensure all necessary facilities are in place to preserve the park’s ecological integrity.

On another note, Mayor Chen pointed out that BLACKPINK’s concerts will return to the Kaohsiung National Stadium on October 18 and 19, expected to draw nearly 100,000 fans. The city has launched shopping district and night market voucher campaigns, connecting local businesses, shopping malls, KTVs, and restaurants with special promotions so concertgoers can enjoy both music and local cuisine. He also directed the Transportation Bureau, Police Department, and Kaohsiung Mass Rapid Transit Bureau to prepare comprehensive crowd and traffic management plans to ensure public safety and order.

Before the meeting, Mayor Chen also presented awards to Kaohsiung’s 2025 Model Filial Exemplars, honoring ten outstanding citizens — including Lu Di-jun, Chang Yu-fen, Yeh Pan Yu-ying, Tsai Shu-hsing, Shih Chung-hui, Lee Pin-chang, Huang Pan Shu-ching, Liu Yu-chieh, Tsai Ju-chuan, and Lai Kun-yi — for embodying filial piety and positive moral values that bring harmony and inspiration to society.
