The boat races of the Dragon Boat Festival

In every season of the year, there are exciting festival activities in Kaohsiung. During the Kaohsiung Lantern Festival, timed around the traditional Lantern Festival that follows the Chinese New Year, the dazzling sea of lights stretching around the harbor and along both banks of the Love River, along with the fireworks launched from the water of the harbor, attracts huge numbers of local and overseas visitors every year— 9.3 million in 2011. In November, the city hosts the Kaohsiung International Steel and Iron Sculpture Festival or the Kaohsiung International Container Art Festival, held biennially in alternate years. Each invites both local and international artists to create artworks out of materials

characteristic of Kaohsiung's industries— iron, steel, and shipping containers. The 2010 Steel and Iron Sculpture Festival attracted nearly 120,000 visitors. Other events such as the Kaohsiung Spring Arts Festival, the Kaohsiung Design Festival, the Exhibition of Austronesian Cultures, and the Kaohsiung Hakka Culture Festival bring a rich artistic banquet to Kaohsiung. The boat races of the Dragon Boat Festival, the various festivals of Taiwan's indigenous peoples, the Song Jiang martial arts troupes of Neimen, the Kaohsiung Lion Dance Festival, and the Zuoying Wannian Folklore Festival, to name but a few, express the splendid vitality of Kaohsiung's ethnic communities, folk customs and religious cultures.
