[Kaohsiung News] In an effort to promote reclaimed water initiatives, the Kaohsiung City Government’s Water Resources Bureau delivered a special presentation during the April 8 municipal administrative meeting. The plan aims to support industrial development by expanding the supply of reclaimed and desalinated water. The city has proactively advanced the development of the Qiaotou and Nanzih Reclaimed Water Plants to support the high-tech industries in the Nanzih Technology Industrial Park. The feasibility and scheduling of desalination projects—including those intended for the planned Baipu Industrial Park—will be dynamically adjusted based on actual water demand, ensuring sufficient supply for industrial use.
Mayor Chen emphasized that the Fengshan and Linhai Reclaimed Water Plants are already in operation and must maintain stable output. He also noted that construction of the Qiaotou Reclaimed Water Plant is ahead of schedule and asked the Water Resources Bureau to ensure that water supply begins as planned in 2026. As for the Nanzih plant, currently under construction, he emphasized the importance of maintaining construction progress and safety standards to ensure timely, high-quality completion. Regarding growing industrial demand for new water sources, he urged the Water Resources Bureau to remain responsive and maintain close communication with both the National Land Agency and the Water Resources Agency.
According to the Water Resources Bureau, the reclaimed water program recycles effluent from wastewater treatment plants for industrial use, establishing it as a reliable and high-quality alternative water source. This not only enhances Kaohsiung’s appeal to prospective manufacturers but also promotes private-sector investment and supports the growth of the reclaimed water industry. Currently, southern Kaohsiung has two operational plants in Fengshan and Linhai, supplying a total of 83,000 metric tons of reclaimed water per day to the Linhai Industrial Park. Meanwhile, planning for the Qiaotou and Nanzih facilities is advancing to meet future water needs in the Nanzih Technology Industrial Park’s high-tech sector.
The meeting also featured a keynote speech by Dr. Lien Hsien-ming, President of the Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research, who discussed the impact of U.S. tariffs on Taiwan. Mayor Chen concluded by thanking all city departments and agencies for ensuring smooth and safe ancestral rites during the Tomb-Sweeping Festival holiday. He also acknowledged the success of Children’s Day events, which received widespread praise from the public.
