    Kaohsiung Science Park

    The cultural scene of Kaohsiung city is special and fascinating, with a multicultural population consisting of eight ethnic groups.

    The Kaohsiung Science Park, covering an area of 570 hectares, is located at the border of three townships in Kaohsiung city: Lujhu, Gangshan, and Yongan. The Park is a technology station with great potential: it provides a stable water and electricity supply and is located in an area free of floods and fault lines. The development is scheduled for completion in 2010. Revenues in 2020 are expected to reach 500 billion NTD and employment will be extended to 52,000 people.

    The Kaohsiung Science Park follows the paradigm of Taiwan’s Science Parks. It integrates the Nanzih Export Processing Zone, the Kaohsiung Multi-functional Commerce & Trade Park, the Kaohsiung Software Industrial Park, and the Pingdong Export Processing Zone, in order to establish a southern technology corridor. In addition, the Kaohsiung city Government promotes the Science Education & Culture Park on the basis of the Park. It furthermore combines the Yanchao University district and Kaohsiung New Township Plans to construct an R & D center for high-tech industries in southern Taiwan.

    * Transportation

      The Kaohsiung Science Park has a convenient transportation network. For transport by car or by train, access is by way of National Expressway No. 1, via Lujhu and Gangshan Interchanges. The reserved highway that connects to the national expressway will be completed in 2007. Moreover, the Park is adjacent to Provincial Highways Tai 1 and Tai 17, and city Routes No. 184 and No. 186. In terms of the railway system, Lujhu and Gangshan Station of the West Coast railway are close to the Park. Furthermore, the Red Line of Kaohsiung Metro Rapid Transportation System has scheduled a route, starting from Kaohsiung, going north, passing through Gangshan, and then extending to Lujhu.

    For transport by air, the Park is about 15 kilometers from Tainan Airport and 30 kilometers from Kaohsiung International Airport. Products can be delivered all over the world through these international airports. In terms of sea transportation, the Park is about 25 kilometers from Kaohsiung Harbor, the top sixth international container harbor, and which provides convenient services.

    * Area Planning

    The total area of the Kaohsiung Science Park covers 570 hectares, of which 210 hectares are scheduled as factory area. There are two stages of development: the first stage, starting on July 7, 2001, aimed to develop 360 hectares, and the second stage, starting in January 2005, aimed to develop the final 210 hectares. Facilities for supporting daily life are complete and conveniently facilitated. The Kaohsiung Science Park is only a 25-minute drive from Tainan City and Kaohsiung City, as well as being at a 7-minute driving distance from downtown Lujhu or Gangshan.

    The Kaohsiung Science Park has 20 universities, two American Schools and one Japanese School within a 30-kilometer perimeter. The Park also set up primary schools and junior high schools to provide education for the children of Park employees. The Park is close to the business districts of Tainan City and Kaohsiung City, which boast great numbers of department stores, shops and supermarkets. There are also several international hotels nearby providing quality urban leisure life.

    * Industries (1)

      High-tech science industries that meet all of the Park’s requirements are welcome to apply for stationing in the Kaohsiung Science Park.
      * Semiconductor Manufacturing: bringing in Integrated Circuit (IC) design, IC manufacturing (Foundry), IC materials, IC structure, testing, production facilitization, and wafer materials.
      * Precision Machinery: bringing in automation systems, precision molding, IC & LCD production facilitization, controllers, micro-electro machines, sensors, and medical instruments.
      * Optoelectronics: bringing in optical systems and components (such as LTPS/TFT-LCD/PDP/OLED panels), color display tubes, CD-ROM drives, digital cameras, contact image sensors (CIS), optical semiconductors (Photodiodes), and optical systems and components (such as instruments, lenses, and laser devices)

    * Industries (2)

      * Computers & Peripherals: bringing in computer systems, storage devices, input devices, output devices, Internet/Network devices, special software, key electrical and mechanical components, as well as passive components.
      * Telecommunications: bringing in telecommunication systems (including telephones, modems, switches), microwave wireless telecommunication systems and semiconductor devices, optical fiber systems and components, as well as satellite telecommunication systems.
      * Biotechnology: bringing in biotechnology and relevant industries concentrating on genetic engineering, including agricultural biotechnology, flowers, ornamental plants, vaccine reagent, drug-controlled patches, medical instruments, biomedical materials, as well as testing and certificate services

    * The Telecommunications Technology Center

      Grasping the dynamic development of telecommunication technology and industries, the government planned to set up a telecommunications technology center in the Kaohsiung Science Park, which started to operate in 2004. Since the telecommunications technology center functions as R & D, it will have a “Magnetic Effect,” attracting upstream and downstream telecommunication companies to be stationed in the Park, therefore upgrading the technological level of telecommunication industries in Taiwan.

    The telecommunication center is primarily focused on developing telecommunications, information and communications security, and broadcasting. It provides the function of “one certification facility at home to clear customs all over the world” and is expected to generate a profit of 200 billion NTD per year for the Kaohsiung Science Park.
