    【Kaohsiung News】The Kaohsiung City Government has held a meeting for promoting accident-prone road prevention and control. Hosted by Deputy Secretary-General Wang Chi-Chuan, the Transportation Bureau of Kaohsiung City Government gave a briefing on the overview of accidents in the first half of 2022. The police offices inspected dangerous road junctions in the city and instructed the Public Works Bureau, Kaohsiung City Government and the Transportation Bureau of Kaohsiung City Government has sought NTD90 million worth of funds from the Construction and Planning Agency, Ministry of the Interior to improve dangerous road junctions. In cooperation with the police offices that strengthen law enforcement, road safety constructions have been promoted at an accelerated pace.

    According to the analysis of the Transportation Bureau of Kaohsiung City Government, the main causes of accidents caused by the elderly mostly include side impact collisions and crossover collisions at junctions, especially failing to make a left turn as regulated. Accidents generally take place in city hot spots such as public places, financial institutions, markets, etc. Wang Chi-Hsuan has instructed the police offices to adjust traffic post duties based on analysis result requirements and strengthen law enforcement on various forms of accidents.

    According to the Transportation Bureau of Kaohsiung City Government, following the relaxation of the pandemic in August last year and in March this year, the ratio of accidents among the elderly has shown an upward trend, more than half taking place at junctions, a clear indication of the elderly who have long not left home whose driving is out-of-practice, thus their negligence over traffic safety rules. In addition to strengthening law enforcement, the Kaohsiung City Government has also launched multi-point advocacy such that physical advocacy occasions have been arranged through the Civil Affairs Bureau, Kaohsiung City Government, Kaohsiung Fishermen’s Association and market systems. Broadcasting in village offices has even been used to continue reminding elders to pay attention to traffic when going out.

    In addition, the regulated accident-prone road junction improvement projects were checked during the meeting, including 74 improvement projects such as Nanjing Rd. Fengshan District/Rueilong E. Rd. junction, Daliao District Daliao Rd./Huazhong Rd., etc. Among them, 51 sites have been completed. It was resolved that the Third maintenance Office, Directorate General of Highways, MOTC, the Public Works Bureau, Kaohsiung City Government and the Transportation Bureau of Kaohsiung City Government and other units must complete all the project improvements within this year in order to provide a safer vehicle environment for access by the city residents.

    Targeting the “Dangerous Road Junction Improvement Plan” launched by the Construction and Planning Agency, Ministry of the Interior this year, after a discussion among the meeting participants, a total of eight projects met the application qualifications and the application proposal in the amount of about NTD90 million were submitted. Wang Chi-Chuan also requested at the meeting the Construction and Planning Agency, Ministry of the Interior (Southern Branch) to assist in grasping the application progress, thereby rendering full support to Kaohsiung City’s road safety development efforts.

    The Transportation Bureau of Kaohsiung City Government added that many people travel during the summer vacation period. Whether seniors or young students, only drivers that remind one another to observe safety and refrain from over-speeding, driving without a license and tailgating, and maintaining risk awareness, to “go out happily and come back safely.”
